- first stay prepared: The impact of any emergency or disaster can be reduced by being prepared and knowing what to do before, during, and after the emergency. Listen to local media to find out forecasts and emergency instructions. Learn the emergency plans at your workplace. Also learn the evacuation route in the community. Take a first aid course. You may not have access to professional medical care.
- Make a family plan: Families should organize a plan for what to do, where to go and safety precautions during a natural disaster. This plan must be in writing and each family member should receive a copy. Go from room to room in the house and imagine what would happen to each of the objects during disasters. Then identifies potential 'safe', as under desks during earthquakes or basements during tornadoes areas. Identifies all possible outputs that could be used in case of natural disaster. Select a potential alternative meeting point outside your area in case you separate yourself from the family. Also, select a contact located outside your area for everyone to communicate through the contact chosen. Teach family members who are old enough to turn off gas, electricity and water from the main switches.
